Anand L. Rai Confirms Tanu Weds Manu 3: A Nostalgic Nod to the Original Actress Who Lost the Role to Kangana Ranaut

So, nine long years after the mega-hit sequel Tanu Weds Manu Returns, director Anand L. Rai has finally confirmed that part three is officially happening! Yep, you heard it right. Tanu and Manu are coming back to our screens, along with the fan-favorite Datto.💃

But wait, there’s more! Did you know Kangana Ranaut wasn’t the first choice for Tanu? I know, shock laga na? The makers initially approached two other actresses before Kangana locked the role and etched it in our hearts forever.

The Almost-Tanu Brigade!

First up, it was Neetu Chandra, the actress from Traffic Signal. She spilt the beans back in 2021, revealing that she had actually signed on for the role. But then, lo and behold, Madhavan—our very own Manu—recommended Kangana’s name. Neetu was left out in the cold, bechari.

“I’m talking about Madhavan. He said, ‘There was another actress who was signed for Tanu Weds Manu, but I recommended Kangana’s name’. That actress was me, the one who had signed Tanu Weds Manu earlier,” Neetu had confessed. Ouch, that must’ve hurt! 🥲

And then there was Chitrangada Singh. The Desi Boyz star was also in talks but decided to pass on the project because she was on a break from movies. Later, she admitted regretting her decision. Well, hindsight is 20/20, kya karein?

Anand L. Rai’s Vision for Part Three

According to our man Anand L. Rai, he never initially planned for Tanu Weds Manu to become a franchise. But the characters, played so brilliantly by Madhavan and Kangana, demanded more screen time. “Tanu Weds Manu is a kind of franchise that demands a part three. Those characters are so beautiful, and they were played so beautifully by Madhavan and Kangana. Those characters became a little bigger than the story itself,” he said.

Rai added, “With Tanu Weds Manu Returns, we introduced a new character, Datto. These characters are all asking for a third part. The minute we have a great story—the story that Tanu, Manu, and Datto deserve—we’ll go for it.”
