Ananth Mahadevan on ‘Laapataa Ladies’ Plagiarism: ‘Coincidence? I Think Not!’

Hold your horses, Bollywood buffs! Here comes the latest spicy gossip from tinsel town, brought to you by yours truly, Bollywood Newshound Nisha!

Picture this: Ananth Mahadevan, our beloved veteran director, is fuming over Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan’s latest flick, ‘Laapataa Ladies.’ Why? Well, Ananthji thinks the movie is a tad too similar to his 1999 masterpiece, ‘Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol.’ Now, isn’t that a plot twist worthy of a Bollywood script? 😏

So, what’s the buzz about? Mahadevan’s film, aired on DD Metro back in the day, revolves around brides getting swapped at a railway station. Fast forward to today, and Rao’s movie seems to be singing the same tune. Coincidence? Mahadevan doesn’t think so! He’s “amused” (read: slightly miffed) but doesn’t blame Kiran or Aamir. After all, they’re old colleagues, practically family! But hey, a little acknowledgment wouldn’t hurt, right?

In a candid chat with Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri on his YouTube channel, Mahadevan spilled the beans on the uncanny resemblance. He even narrated the quirky incident that sparked his original idea, thanks to veteran actor Satyen Kappu. Imagine this: Satyen’s wife, post-marriage, mistakenly walks off with a porter thinking it’s her hubby. Farooq Sheikh, another legend, immediately saw the story potential and voila, ‘Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol’ was born!

Despite the brouhaha, Mahadevan is taking it in stride, chuckling at the irony. But beneath the laughs, there’s a hint of wistfulness. A nod from the ‘Laapataa Ladies’ team would’ve been the cherry on top for our dear Ananthji.

In the midst of this drama, Kiran Rao was spotted at the KASHISH Pride Film Festival, advocating for better representation of LGBTQIA+ members, disabled persons, and caste minorities in films. You go, girl! 🎉

Nisha’s Nutshell:
In the land of Bollywood, inspiration is just a wink away! But hey, a little tip of the hat to the original creator can save a lot of drama. Remember, folks, if your story gets mixed up, make sure it’s not at a railway station! 🚂🎬
