Anurag Kashyap on Payal Kapadia’s Cannes Triumph: ‘India Loves Snatching Glory’ | Bollywood

Hold onto your popcorn, Bollywood buffs! Here’s your daily dose of drama, served with a side of sarcasm by yours truly, Bollywood Newshound Nisha! 🎬🍿

Anurag Kashyap: The Unfiltered Filmmaker Takes a Swipe at ‘India@Cannes’

Ah, Anurag Kashyap, the man who never holds back his punches—especially when it comes to the glitzy world of cinema. In a recent interview, our beloved straight-shooter decided to drop a truth bomb on India’s so-called collective victory at Cannes 2024, courtesy of Payal Kapadia. Spoiler alert: He’s not buying it.

Let’s dive into the dramatic world of Anurag, shall we?

Indie Filmmakers: The Real Heroes (According to Anurag)

Anurag, in his no-holds-barred style, told PTI that he’s tired of India claiming victories that aren’t theirs. He pointed out that Payal Kapadia’s Cannes win was more of a solo journey, thanks to French funding. Yes, you read that right! India hasn’t even handed over the promised rebate to her film All We Imagine as Light. Talk about a classic case of ‘all talk, no action.’ 🤷‍♀️

“I get very upset when it’s said ‘India@Cannes’. This is a boost… a shot in the arm for a lot of independent filmmakers but their victory is their own. India didn’t have any moment at Cannes, not a single of those films are Indian. We need to address it the way it should be addressed. India has stopped supporting such cinema, the kind of cinema that was at Cannes.”

Well, there you have it, folks. Anurag throwing shade like a pro! 🌴

The Cold Hard Truth: India Doesn’t Support Indie Films

Anurag didn’t stop there. He went on to list other indie filmmakers who had to look outside India for support. Sandhya Suri got her funds from the UK Film Lottery Fund. Karan Kandhari? Also UK-funded. And let’s not forget Konstantin Bojanov, who had to finance his film almost entirely on his own. Meanwhile, back in India, these films struggle to even get a cinema release.

Shoutout to Payal Kapadia’s last Cannes-winning film. Has it been released in India? Nope.

“The government does not even have a support system for things that bring a lot of soft power, cultural respect to India. Let’s stop this useless celebration.”

Ouch. That’s gotta sting. 🐝

A Brief Glance at Anurag’s Journey

For those living under a rock, Anurag made his directorial debut with Paanch, which never saw the light of day. His second film, Black Friday, was delayed for years due to its controversial content. But hey, he struck gold with Dev D, Gulaal, and of course, the iconic Gangs of Wasseypur. From Mukkabaaz to Sacred Games, he’s been the master of gritty storytelling.

What’s Next for Anurag?

Brace yourselves, because Anurag is back on screen! He’s set to play the antagonist in the crime-thriller series Bad Cop, featuring Gulshan Deviah. And let’s not forget his negative role in Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja. Oh, and his neo-noir thriller Kennedy premiered at Cannes 2023. Talk about a busy bee! 🐝

Nisha’s Nutshell:

So, what’s the moral of this Bollywood tale? Simple. In the glittering world of cinema, it’s every filmmaker for themselves. Because when it comes to real support, India seems to be all about the applause and none of the action. 🎭

Until next time, keep the drama on the screen and the popcorn in your lap! 🍿💁‍♀️
