His dad and uncle, coming from a village, held on tightly to their sanskari values, even in the glittery world of B-town. Abhay admits, "Pehle toh mujhe samajh nahi aaya, par ab main samajh sakta hoon."

Even with his unconventional film choices, the Deol elders were like, "Beta, yeh kya kar rahe ho?" His first film, Socha Na Tha, was a family-backed venture, but his next projects like Manorama and Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local had the family scratching their heads.
