Dalip Tahil: The Father Who Was Almost A Bhai!

Arre waah, remember Dalip Tahil? The iconic actor who was everybody’s dad or villain in the 80s and 90s? Yes, the same Madan Chopra from Baazigar who gave SRK and Kajol a tough time. But here’s a twist—aaj hum baat kar rahe hain Dalip Tahil ke role ke baare mein in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

Aamir Khan’s debut film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, was a massive hit. Directed by Mansoor Khan, this 1988 blockbuster had Juhi Chawla as the leading lady. And guess what? Dalip Tahil played Aamir’s father, Dhanraj, even though he was just in his early 30s! Haan, you heard it right, bhai log! When the 20-year-old Aamir was romancing on-screen, Dalip Tahil was playing his dad. Bollywood ka kamaal hai, yaar! 😜

Dalip Tahil Reflects On That Dad Role

In an interview with Cyrus Says, Dalip Tahil got candid about his first father role. He said, "It was my first father role, and the film was a game changer for me. I am ten years older than Aamir. In fact, that was the reason why quite a few actors didn’t take the role as they didn’t want to do a father role. That’s what Nasir Hussain sir (producer) had told me. I was in my early 30s at the time and didn’t think about it twice, the role was fantastic and so I did it."

Bhai, imagine being only ten years older than your on-screen son and still pulling off the role with such finesse. Wah wah, Dalip ji!

Typecast Ka Dar Nahi Tha, Magar…

When asked if he feared being typecast, Dalip Tahil said he didn’t initially worry about it. But after Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, he received multiple offers to play the father role. "If something succeeds, everyone wants you to play the same thing all over again. But fortunately for me, I managed to do other stuff," he shared. Sach mein, Bollywood mein agar ek role hit ho jaye, toh sab wahi karwana chahte hain. Good thing, Dalip bhai managed to break the mold! 👏
