Imtiaz Ali: The Films That Shaped Me Before I Became a Filmmaker | Bollywood

Namaste, my filmy friends! It’s your favorite Bollywood gossip queen, Khabree Kiran, back with some masaledaar khabar straight from the heart of Bollywood. This time, we’re diving into the mind of the ever-enigmatic filmmaker, Imtiaz Ali, who recently shared his cinematic philosophy at the Jaipur Literature Festival. Grab your chai, sit back, and let’s unravel what this creative genius has to say!

Picture this: Imtiaz Ali, the maestro behind cult favorites like "Rockstar" and "Tamasha," stands before an eager audience. But wait! Instead of singing praises for his own creations, he’s all set to defend the timeless classic "Sholay" over his own films. Kyun, you ask? Well, according to him, the movies we grow up watching become our personal property, while the ones we make are like rental homes. 😄

Ali reminisced about his early days as a movie buff, revealing that despite his films having a loyal fan base, he finds it amusing when people passionately defend them. "Bhailog, for me, the important flicks are not my own creations like ‘Tamasha’ or ‘Rockstar.’ Nope! The true gems are those I enjoyed before the filmmaking bug bit me. Say something against ‘Sholay,’ and I’ll be ready to protest like a true filmi keeda," he quipped, with a twinkle in his eye.

Ah, the irony of life! Imtiaz admits that being labeled as a filmmaker "ahead of his time" is both a blessing and a bane. Just the other day, a girl in the lift asked him if he considers himself ahead of his time. His response? "Arre yaar, I’m trying hard to align with the present. This whole thing where my movies don’t ka-boom at the box office on day one but become blockbusters later is something I’m working to change!"

But here’s the twist, doston. Imtiaz doesn’t blame it on the audience or the universe. He candidly admits it’s his storytelling incapacity. "If people have to watch my film thrice to truly enjoy it, then the fault is mine," he says. "Why can’t all the masala and nuances be savored in one go? I’m on a mission to simplify my storytelling, just like the epic ‘Mahabharata’—if that can be understood by all, why not my films?"

Even though "Tamasha" is hailed as a life-altering saga, Imtiaz insists he’s not doling out life lessons through his films. "Bhai, I don’t have gyan to spare. If someone finds a nugget of wisdom in my movies, toh it’s their choice. I just hope that when the credits roll and the theatre doors open, everyone leaves with a smile plastered on their face."

Kiran’s Gyan: Bollywood is like a magical dhaba. Some dishes become instant hits, while others grow on you over time. But remember, it’s not just about the biryani or the butter chicken—sometimes, the daal you grew up eating is what you crave the most. So, here’s to the classics and the contemporary gems—may they all find a place in our hearts! ❤️
