Alright folks, fasten your seatbelts and put on your 3D glasses because we’re about to journey deep into the heart of Bollywood! Now, who better to guide us than our very own ‘Mad Hatter’ of the movie industry, the audacious and always enlightening, Anurag Kashyap.
In a recent tête-à-tête on the YouTube channel ‘Humans of Cinema’, our dear Mr. Kashyap decided to pull the curtain back on India’s love affair with hero-worship. With the finesse of a seasoned psychologist, he dissected our obsession with larger-than-life figures on the silver screen. "We are a country of hero worshippers," he stated, almost like he was stating the obvious. "We are deprived of many things and have low self-esteem and confidence. We need heroes. Why do our films have larger-than-life heroes?" I mean, the man does have a point!
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. While Hollywood’s superhumans are often hidden behind masks, our desi heroes bask in the glow of their own charisma. Anurag quipped, "We are the only country where actors won’t cover their faces while playing superheroes. The masks would be so small because it is important to show their faces.” Well, we wouldn’t want to miss out on those chiseled jawlines and dimpled smiles, now would we?
But wait, there’s more. In a unique twist, Kashyap compared our beloved Bollywood superstars to Hollywood superheroes. “They have Iron Man and other superheroes; we have Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan as our superheroes,” he chuckled. He even included Sunny Deol in the mix, embodying the invincibility vibe that Indian audiences seemingly crave.
Apparently, it’s not just about mindless adoration. Kashyap suggests that this hero-worship is a reflection of a deeper societal need. “This is in all of us; we need heroes to feel better about ourselves. We fantasise about this. An average Indian dreams about doing something heroic.” Hmm, food for thought, isn’t it?
In other news, our resident maverick, Anurag Kashyap, will soon be seen in Disney+ Hotstar’s Bad Cop and a Tamil flick, Maharaja. Can’t wait to see what he’s got up his sleeve this time!
Now, here’s a juicy tidbit from Aditya Datt about the off-screen camaraderie between Gulshan Devaiah and Anurag Kashyap in Bad Cop: "Their off-screen bond made the shooting process smoother." Ah, the power of bromance!
