Mani Ratnam Reveals His Dream Cast for ‘Alai Payuthey’: SRK and Kajol!

Hello Bollywood buffs, guess who’s back with the juiciest tidbits straight from the filmi duniya? That’s right, it’s your one and only Khabree Kiran, armed with sass, sarcasm, and some serious Bollywood gyaan. Grab your chai and get comfy, because today’s scoop is all about the maestro himself, Mani Ratnam! 🎬

So, picture this: It’s the year 2000, and Mani Ratnam, the wizard of storytelling, has a light bulb moment. He’s dreaming up "Alai Payuthey," a love saga that would eventually make its way to Bollywood as "Saathiya." Now, here’s the real masala – originally, Mani sahab wanted to cast none other than Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Yup, you heard that right! King Khan and his on-screen dulhania almost graced this Tamil blockbuster. But alas, the climax of the movie had him scratching his head. 🧐

The original flick starred R. Madhavan and Shalini, weaving a tale of young love, elopement, and the inevitable shaadi ke baad ki drama. It was later remade in Hindi with Rani Mukerji and Vivek Oberoi, who brought the same naach-gaana and emotional rollercoaster to the desi audience. But imagine if SRK and Kajol had been in it – kya scene hota!

In a candid chat at the G5A Retrospective, Mani Ratnam spilled the beans, saying, "What I had planned with Shah Rukh was ‘Alai Payuthey’. I narrated the story, and he was game. But the ending? Arre, that was a total dhakkan for me!" 😅

He further elaborated how the missing piece of the puzzle clicked into place while working on his 1998 film "Dil Se" with SRK and Manisha Koirala. Once "Dil Se" wrapped up, the ending for "Alai Payuthey" finally made sense. But by then, the ship had sailed for the SRK-Kajol pairing.

Mani Ratnam also shared some filmmaking wisdom, noting how movies evolve from inception to the final cut. "You’re never sure it’s perfect
Even after writing, during shooting, you seek something more. It’s a continuous construction," he mused. He described films as "pieces of people and bits of life," striving to mirror the entirety of life itself. And, of course, he joked about the importance of actors bringing scripts to life – otherwise, "shout at them!" 😜

Currently, a three-day retrospective on Mani Ratnam’s illustrious career is being held by G5A, showcasing gems like “Nayakan,” “Bombay,” “Raavan,” and, of course, the almost-SRK-Kajol starrer “Alai Payuthey.”

Kiran’s Gyan: Bollywood, my friends, is a world of endless possibilities and what-ifs. Sometimes, the biggest stars miss the boat on legendary roles, all thanks to a little writer’s block. But that’s what makes this industry so fascinating – you never know what magic (or mishaps) lie behind the curtain! 😎✹
