Buckle up, Bollywood buffs! Hereâs a little-known tidbit from the treasure trove of tinsel townâs golden era, served with a side of spice and sass by yours truly, Khabree Kiran. Ready to dive into some filmi nostalgia? Letâs roll! đŹâ¨
Picture this: the iconic duo of Waheeda Rehman and Dev Anand lighting up the silver screen with their unmatched chemistry, making us all go "wah, kya jodi hai!" But hold on to your popcorn, because the making of the classic film Guide was almost a filmy drama of its own! đ˛
Back in 1965, with Dev Saab producing and Vijay Anand eventually directing, Guide was a cinematic marvel inspired by RK Narayanâs novel. However, Waheeda ji almost gave it a miss, thanks to some behind-the-scenes drama. "Arre baba, kya kar raha tha yeh Raj Khosla?" Waheeda ji had her reservations about working with him, thanks to some past creative clashes. She was so firm that even Devâs legendary charm couldnât sway her at first.
But Dev Saab, being the smooth-talker he was, tried to mend fences. "Chalo Waheeda, letâs let bygones be bygones," he coaxed. Waheeda ji stood her ground though, hoping Goldie aka Vijay Anand would take the directorâs chair. Alas, Goldie was busy with another project at the time, leaving the directorâs seat a game of musical chairs.
Enter Chetan Anand, who had his own casting ideas. But guess what? He didnât want Waheeda either! "Aisa kaise chalega?" Dev Saab wasnât having any of it. Priya Rajvansh was considered, but her dancing skillsâyaani, naachna aata nahi thaâwere not up to par for Rosieâs role. Waheeda ji chuckled at the irony, "Ek mujhe nahi chahiye tha, ek main nahi chahiye thi. Kya kismat hai!"
Finally, the stars alignedâGoldie came on board, Waheeda ji was cast, and the rest, as they say, is history. Guide went on to be a masterpiece, a film Waheeda ji cherishes to this day. And letâs not forget, she and Dev Saab went on to dazzle us in seven films, leaving an indelible mark on Bollywoodâs golden era.
