So, Shahid Kapoor – yaad hai na, woh chota sa chocolate boy who made every girl’s heart go dhak dhak in Ishq Vishk? Turns out, he wasn’t always a Kapoor. Can you believe it? Haan haan, sach mein! Before making his big debut, Shahid was known as Shahid Khatter. 😲
Naya naam, nayi pehchaan?
Our dashing hero’s mom, Neelima Azim, was married to Rajesh Khatter, and thus Shahid used to go by Shahid Khatter. Sounds like a plot twist right out of a Bollywood film, doesn’t it? His brother, Ishaan Khatter, obviously still carries the Khatter surname. But jab time aaya for Shahid to sign his first film, he dropped Khatter and picked up Kapoor. Badi filmy baat hai, but it happened! Producer Ramesh Taurani even mentioned in an interview that he had no idea Shahid was Pankaj Kapur’s son. Imagine his surprise! 😅
Salman Khan ka magic?
Ab yeh baat bhi interesting hai, dosto! Shahid’s entry into Bollywood wasn’t due to any push from his famous parents, but rather, his innocent face that reminded people of Salman Khan. Pehle, Shahid was already making girls swoon in the music video "Aankhon Mein Tera Hi Chehra" with Hrishita Bhatt. The video went viral (as viral as things could get in pre-Instagram days), and everyone was like, "Who’s this cute boy?"
Ramesh Taurani saw potential in him and promised a good launch. Bas, phir kya tha? Taurani told Shahid, "You’re good, but wait a bit; you look too young for now." How time flies! Shahid waited and got his big break with Ishq Vishk in 2003.
Innocent looks make stars
Ramesh Taurani noted that Shahid’s innocent looks were a big part of why he was cast. He said, “Innocence is key for a hero. Look at Salman Khan or Ajay Devgn.” And he wasn’t wrong. Ishq Vishk turned Shahid, Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala into overnight stars. Shahid and Amrita even paired up again for Vivaah, making them one of Bollywood’s most adorable on-screen jodis.
