SPECIAL: Cannes in Chaos? Aditya Sarpotdar Dishes on Indian Influencers Turning Premier Film Gala into Glitz Parade: “National Awards Aren’t Won with Selfies and Sparkles!”

Darlings, it’s your favorite Bollywood Newshound Nisha, here to spill the chai đŸ”! So the 2024 Cannes Film Festival is drawing eyeballs, not for the movies, but for our desi influencers strutting their stuff on the red carpet.

While some are throwing shade, our dear director Aditya Sarpotdar is here to make sense of it all. And guess what? He’s not all that impressed. In his words, “this should not be a fashion event. This should not be an influencer event. It is a hardcore film event.” But hey, he’s not completely dismissing the Insta-stars. He adds, “Look at the end of it, when you finish the festival, we are all celebrating the filmmakers. We are all celebrating the team that won the award.”

Aditya, who’s biting his nails for the release of his film Munjya, thinks it’s the movies, not the influencers’ couture that should do the talking. He says, “No amount of influencers or outfits or any buzz created on the red carpet will get you any acclaim as a nation.” He’s more stoked about Indian films making waves at Cannes, like All We Imagine As Light starring Chhaya Kadam.

So, while he’s okay with influencers being a part of the Cannes circus, he insists it’s the cinema that’s the real star. As he puts it, “These pre-events are always ways to promote the festival more
But that doesn’t sum up what the festival is. The sum of the festival is the cinema there.”

Even though influencers added some glitz and glamour, it’s the award-winning films that truly represent Indian cinema, he believes. And I say, Amen to that! 🙏

Now, returning to his directorial duties, Aditya is gearing up for the release of his supernatural flick Munjya, featuring Sharvari Wagh and Abhay Varma. Mark your calendars for June 7, cinephiles!

And there you have it, folks! The moral of the story? A film festival should be about, well, films! Not who wore what or who snapped the best selfie. So, while our influencers may dazzle us with their glitzy gowns and pouty poses, let’s not forget the real stars – the films! đŸŽ„đŸŒŸ
