Amit Sial and the Role That Got Away: Slumdog Millionaire’s Police Inspector
Oh, Amit Sial, yaar, kya kahoon? This talented actor, who has entertained us in shows like Mirzapur, Inside Edge, and Maharani, recently spilled the beans on a career-changing role he once turned down. Yes, you heard it right! He was offered the role of the Police Inspector in Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire. The same role that our beloved Irrfan Khan immortalized. 😲
In a juicy interview with Bollywood Bubble, Amit revealed that he first auditioned for the role of Salim, the elder brother of Dev Patel’s character. "Danny Boyle himself came to me for Slumdog Millionaire. But then he said, ‘You look a bit too old for this part’," Amit chuckled as he recalled.
Poor Amit was ready to go on a crash diet! But Danny Boyle, being the wise sage he is, said, "We know you can do it, but what about the maturity? You have so many years of experience, how will you reduce that when you act? You’ll end up just acting.” Wah, kya baat hai, Danny Bhai! 👏
Just when Amit thought it was over, he got another offer. "Phir mujhe message aaya ki woh jo police wala hai na, jo interrogate karta hai, jo baadme Irrfan Khan ne kiya tha, woh karoge kya?" Amit didn’t grasp the importance of that role at the time. "Mujhe uska importance script mein samajh nahi aaya. Shayad us waqt itni akal nahi thi, aur mujhe laga ki yaar ye to kuch hai hi nahi, to bas question poochta hai," he admitted.
Fast forward to the film’s release, and Amit saw Irrfan Khan’s magical performance. "He [Boyle] even insisted that I do that role but I didn’t do it. Then I saw Irrfan Khan doing the role and creating magic in it. But I think whatever happens, is for the best," Amit concluded with a sigh. Ah, hindsight, you cruel mistress! 😅
