Ah, Bollywood! The land of dreams, drama, and duplicate remakes! Once upon a time, remakes were the golden ticket to box office glory. South Indian films getting the Hindi makeover were all the rage, and vice versa. One such film that had Bollywood biggies buzzing was the remake of "Theri"!
Akshay Kumar vs. Shah Rukh Khan: The Battle Royale
Picture this: Akshay Kumar, fresh off the success of "Holiday" (a remake of Thalapathy Vijay’s "Thupakki"), was eyeing the rights to "Theri", a 2016 Tamil blockbuster. Akki, bhai, was on a mission to repeat history! According to some khufiya sources in 2016, Mr. Khiladi was all set to produce the Hindi version under his banner. And why not? "Theri" had already made waves overseas, giving Akki’s "Airlift" some serious competition in places like Australia. Talk about ‘desi meets videsi’ success!
Enter the Baadshah and his Golmaal Partner
But hold your horses, Akshay! Shah Rukh Khan, the King Khan himself, had his eyes on the prize too! Teaming up with Rohit Shetty after their dhamakedar hits like "Chennai Express" and "Dilwale", SRK was all set to take "Theri" on a joyride. Bollywood’s two biggest Khans were ready for a face-off. Dhamaal, right?
The Underdog Takes the Lead
Alas, neither Akki nor SRK could seal the deal. The remake landed in the lap of none other than Varun Dhawan, courtesy of Atlee and director Kalees. Varun became the chosen one for this high-octane role. Well, as they say, "Taare zameen par" and every film picks its own star!
