Namaste Bollywood ke deewano! It’s your favorite Bollywood snoop, Khabree Kiran, back with some spicy masala straight from the tinsel town. Aaj hum baat kar rahe hain hamare apne Disco Dancer, Mithun Chakraborty ki, who has a story more dramatic than any Bollywood script!
—
Oh, Mithun da, the man who taught a nation how to groove to disco beats while simultaneously dealing with the title of ‘Gareebo Ka Amitabh Bachchan.’ Arre haan, aise hi toh kahani shuru hoti hai, right? This 74-year-old superstar has danced his way into our hearts but not without facing a roller coaster ride of struggles. Imagine being trolled for your skin color during an era of fair-skinned heroes. Even after winning a National Award, the industry still tagged him as the poor man’s Amitabh. Kya yaar, kitni na-insaafi! 😒
Mithun da, with his impeccable dance moves to Bappi Lahiri’s fast beats, became a cult icon, but let’s not forget the shade he got for his gap teeth, dark complexion, and Bengali accent. Even after bagging the National Award for his debut film Mrigayaa (1976), he was often seen in what we can generously call B-grade movies. And hence, he was bestowed the title, ‘Gareebon ka Amitabh.’
Until the ’70s and ’80s, Bollywood was full of heroes born with silver spoons. But then came Mithun da, who broke all norms and became Mr. Popular among the masses. Known as the king of B-grade movies like Gunda, he was loved by the working-class junta. Par haan, our Mithun da wanted to be a hit among all audiences. He once said, “I’m a trailblazer, brought disco and karate on screen, but I aimed to entertain all sorts of spectators.”

Mithun Chakraborty’s journey from B-grade flicks to A-list movies is nothing short of inspiring. He knew he had to mingle with the Bollywood fashion queens to shed his B-grade image. Mithun once said, "No one remembers the LOSERS here except being good. You have to fight to get here. I had to fight." Oh, kitni sahi baat kahi, Mithun da! 💪
Initially, he couldn’t catch the attention of top actresses or insiders. But things took a turn when director Brij Sadanah cast him as the hero in Taqdeer, with Zeenat Aman supporting him. Taqdeer was his ticket to A-list status, after which he gave us hits like Yaadon Ki Kasam and Baat Ban Gayi. He also dazzled in movies like Ashanti and Hum Se Hai Zamana.
Over almost five decades, Mithun da has dabbled in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia, and even Bhojpuri films, acting in over 300 movies! With three National Awards and two Filmfare Awards under his belt, Mithun da’s career is a testament to his versatility. Remember Agneepath? Even playing second fiddle to Amitabh, he stole the limelight as Krishnan Iyer, MA. His life might be biopic-worthy, but Mithun da feels it’s too tragic and might break the audience’s hearts.
Recently, we saw him in Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files. Kya kamaal acting ki, boss! 🎬
Kiran’s Gyan:
Bollywood is like a game of snakes and ladders—you either climb up fast or get bitten down. But if you’re as tenacious as Mithun da, you’ll dance your way to the top, disco-style!
Stay tuned for more gupshup and gossip! Until next time, keep the Bollywood spirit alive! 📽️💃
