A Quiet Place Roars with $52 Million Opening, While Horizon Flops Spectacularly

Ah, Hollywood Harish here, your friendly neighborhood Bollywood snoop, ready to spill the tea on the latest Hollywood box office drama!

"A Quiet Place: Day One" is making some serious noise at the box office! 🤑 With a thundering $53 million domestic opening and an additional $45.5 million internationally, it’s raked in a cool $98.5 million worldwide. Not too shabby for a nearly silent thriller, eh?

But hold your horses! Disney-Pixar’s "Inside Out 2" still reigns supreme, laughing all the way to the bank with its billion-dollar smile. Yet, let’s not downplay "Day One" — a prequel that’s outdone its predecessors. The original "A Quiet Place" started with $50 million, and the 2021 sequel managed $48 million during COVID. So yeah, this one’s a biggie!

Paramount’s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson must be giving himself a pat on the back. “We listened to the fans,” he says. Oh really, Chris? What’s next, a sequel where the monsters are allergic to TikTok videos? 🤔

This start is particularly noteworthy because gasp John Krasinski and Emily Blunt didn’t return! Instead, we’ve got Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn battling those sound-hunting aliens in a New York City setting. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film boasts an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ on CinemaScore. Produced on a $67 million budget, it’s looking pretty solid.

Meanwhile, Kevin Costner’s epic "Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1" is flopping like a fish out of water. A whopping $100 million budget, and it’s only managed to scrape together $11 million. Ouch! Critics are not impressed, and neither are moviegoers. With a 39% Rotten Tomato score and a B- CinemaScore, it’s not looking good for the sequel slated to drop in two months. Better luck next time, Kev! 🥴

Costner, who dug deep into his own pockets to the tune of $38 million to fund this series, might be regretting that decision. Some say it felt more like a mini-series than a feature film. David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research adds, “In this market, a theatrical production that looks like television has a disadvantage.” No kidding! 📺

But let’s not forget the reigning champ, "Inside Out 2", still dominating with $57 million in its third weekend. With a global haul of $1.015 billion, it’s the first film of 2024 to hit the billion-dollar mark. Bravo!

Thanks to the success of "A Quiet Place: Day One" and "Inside Out 2", the year-to-date deficit has shrunk from 21% to 19%. Up next on the summer docket? "Despicable Me 4", "Twisters", and "Deadpool & Wolverine". 🎬

Sony’s "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" rolled into fourth place with $10.3 million. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are still kicking it, bringing in $165 million domestically and $332 million globally. Not bad, but not quite the heights of "Bad Boys for Life".

Rounding out the top five is the Indian sci-fi epic, "Kalki 2898 AD", pulling in $5.4 million from 1,049 locations. Directed by Nag Ashwin, this Telugu-language film scored big on Imax screens with $1.8 million globally. Bollywood in the house, y’all! 🙌

Nisha’s Nutshell: Hollywood, Bollywood, Tollywood — it’s a mad, mad world out there! One weekend you’re on top, the next you’re a flop. Moral of the story? Don’t bet your own money on a movie that feels like a TV show, and always listen to the fans… unless they want a TikTok-themed horror film. Then just run. 🚀
