Welcome to the sluggish summer box office!
Oh, Hollywood, what a hot mess you are this weekend. Let’s dive into the juicy details, shall we? 😏
Well, it seems like our dear Zoe Kravitz has decided to try her hand at directing with “Blink Twice”. A twisted thriller, they say. But guess what? It’s targeting a not-so-thrilling debut of $7 to $8 million from 3,000 theaters. And then we have “The Crow” reboot with Bill Skarsgård swooping in for a hopeful $6 to $9 million from 2,500 theaters. Yawn. 😴
Meanwhile, last weekend’s box office king, “Alien: Romulus”, and the ever-charming “Deadpool & Wolverine” are gearing up for a battle royale. Romulus is expected to rake in another $16 to $19 million in its second week, but that’s a steep drop from its $41 million debut. As for Deadpool & Wolverine, they’re aiming for a similar $16 to $18 million, still hanging onto their title as the second-biggest movie of the year with a jaw-dropping $546 million in North America and $1.14 billion worldwide. Talk about superhero stamina! 💪
And then we have “It Ends With Us”, which apparently refuses to end, aiming for $10 to $12 million in its third week. This Colleen Hoover adaptation has already made a cool $100 million domestically and $187 million globally. Not too shabby, huh? 📚🎬
Now, back to “Blink Twice”. Zoe’s directorial debut stars her fiancé, Channing Tatum, alongside Naomi Ackie. It’s your oh-so-typical psychological thriller where a cocktail waitress ends up on a tech billionaire’s private island and things go south. With an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and a $20 million budget, it might just survive its theatrical run, even if it doesn’t hit those double digits. Amazon MGM is handling the U.S. distribution while Warner Bros. takes care of the rest of the world. 🌍
“The Crow”, on the other hand, is a grizzly reboot led by Bill Skarsgård as a murdered musician out for revenge. This Lionsgate-backed film cost a whopping $50 million to make, and unless it surpasses expectations, it’s heading for flop city. Lionsgate already took a hit with “Borderlands”, starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart, which bombed with just $13.6 million domestically and $18 million worldwide. Ouch. 😬
Despite some late-summer boosts from sequels like “Inside Out 2” and “Despicable Me 4”, overall domestic revenues are still trailing 16% behind last year and a significant 28% behind the pre-pandemic 2019, according to Comscore. Don’t hold your breath for any miracles from late August releases. 😒
Moral of the Story: In Hollywood, even a tech billionaire can’t buy box office success, and sometimes, dead musicians have better luck seeking revenge than landing a blockbuster hit. 🎭💸
