Hello, Bollywood buffs! It’s your favorite snoop, Hollywood Hrishita, here to spill the beans on the latest Hollywood box office drama from our friends across the Pacific. Grab your popcorn, because it’s about to get juicy! 🍿

“Alien: Romulus” – The Alien That Conquered China!

Guess who’s making waves in China? No, it’s not your favorite Bollywood hero but the latest “Alien: Romulus.” This bad boy just snagged the title of Hollywood’s second biggest film of the year at the Chinese mainland box office. Impressive, right? 🤯

In its second weekend, “Alien: Romulus” raked in a whopping RMB140 million ($19.7 million). Compare that to its $26.2 million opening weekend, and we’re looking at a total of RMB523 million ($73.7 million) since its release on August 16. Move over, Kung Fu Panda! 🐼

Among the Hollywood imports of 2024, only “Godzilla v Kong” has managed to beat this extraterrestrial thriller with its gargantuan $134 million. Talk about a legendary battle! 🦖🆚👽

Hollywood’s Other Kids on the Block

While “Alien” is busy flexing its muscles, some other Hollywood flicks are trying to keep up:

  • “Kung Fu Panda 4” – RMB52 million ($52 million)
  • “Despicable Me 4” – RMB56 million ($56 million)
  • “Dune 2” – RMB49.7 million ($49.7 million)
  • “Inside Out 2” – RMB48 million ($48 million)

Looks like our alien friend is leaving these guys in the dust! 🚀

And let’s not forget the IMAX screens, where “Alien Romulus” bagged $2.75 million last weekend, totaling $11.6 million over ten days. That’s around 16% of its China haul. Not too shabby for a bunch of oversized screens, huh?

    A Hedgehog and More

Coming in second place, we have “The Hedgehog,” directed by Gu Changwei. It’s a heartwarming tale of friendship between a rebellious teenager and his mentally-handicapped uncle. With stars like Ge You and Karry Wang (yes, from the TFBoys!), it raked in RMB74.4 million ($10.5 million). 🦔💕

Close behind was “Untouchable,” a Chinese crime drama directing by Wang Daqing and starring Shen Teng, Zhang Yuqi, and Jack Kao. It collected RMB73.4 million ($10.3 million). Not too shabby, eh?

    Other Notables

  • “Go for Broke” – This revenge tale against drug dealers earned $7.1 million in its second weekend, totaling $33.4 million in ten days.
  • “Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Pentagram” – Japanese animation added $4.8 million, reaching $29.2 million in ten days.
  • “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” – This Thai comedy-drama hit snagged $4.4 million but didn’t make it to the top five. Better luck next time, Grandma!
