If you were looking for a thrilling rollercoaster ride of a film, I hate to break it to you: but buckle up for a ride that’s more like a rusty merry-go-round. Welcome to the world of “Hocus Focus.” I’m Review Rani, your guide through this cinematic wilderness, and today we’re going to dissect this so-called ‘thriller’.
“Hocus Focus” attempts to blend the allure of a bank heist with the raw, voyeuristic thrill of found footage. Our story revolves around Bubli Khan (Sona Bhandari), a woman who enjoys the finer things in life (and a LOT of men). Her love interests include a married man she’s hell-bent on making her own, a law-breaking Ajit Pandit (Suchhi Kumar), and our very own law-enforcer, Inspector Khan (Satinder Singh Gahlot).
The plot thickens when a mysterious voyeur convinces Bubli to join a band of misfits for a bank heist. Each participant has their own reasons for joining this not-so-merry band: for Bubli, it’s money (shocker!); for Ajit, it’s love; for two other cronies, it’s a shot at a life of luxury; and for the bank manager, it’s to pay off his gambling debts. The puppet-master behind this whole fiasco convinces them that nothing could go wrong (famous last words). But of course, this wouldn’t be much of a movie if everything went according to plan, would it?
Unfortunately, director Paierry Dodeja’s experiment falls flatter than a pancake. The film tries to capture Bubli’s…err… ‘colourful’ love life through multiple lenses, leading to an overload of explicit content that feels more like a cheap stunt than a narrative necessity. The sheer number of characters further muddles the plot, preventing any meaningful character development.
Despite its intriguing premise, “Hocus Focus” fails to live up to its promise. It’s like ordering a gourmet burger and getting a soggy sandwich instead. The film prioritises shock value over substance, leaving us with a jumbled, unsatisfying mess that’s more yawn-inducing than tension-filled.
__Rani’s Wrap-Up__: “Hocus Focus” turns out to be less of a thrilling heist drama and more of a cautionary tale for filmmakers: ambition doesn’t always translate into a good movie. If you’re seeking a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat cinematic experience, I’d suggest looking elsewhere. This one’s just hocus pocus without the magic. 😏😉🎬
