Jahankilla Film Review: A Punjabi Pledge to Perseverance and Police Dreams

Ready to have your dreams and desires served on a platter of Punjabiness? Well, the film ‘Jahankilla’ might just be your cup of chai, er, I mean, movie. And guess who’s gracing you with her divine presence today? None other than yours truly, Review Rani, here to give you my no-holds-barred take on this cinematic saga.

‘Jahankilla’ – a film that is as intriguing as its name, is set in the robust and colorful terrain of Punjab. It revolves around three brave hearts who, in a bid to transform their lives, step into the intense world of a police academy. A common goal binds them – to pull their families out of the muck of hardships.

Our trio of heroes- Shinda the poor dreamer, Sanju the double MA struggler, and Ghabrati, the comedy king, is as diverse as a Punjabi thali. Shinda, the ambitious one, dreams of donning the IPS uniform to uplift his family from poverty. Sanju, armed with double MAs, is yet another victim of the job market’s brutal indifference. Ghabrati, the jester in the pack, hopes to secure his family’s future with a dose of laughter.

With a running time of 133 minutes, ‘Jahankilla’ feels longer than your aunty’s daily soap, but fear not! It’s got enough drama, laughter, and tears to rival any saas-bahu saga on the telly. Director Vickey Kadam, in his debut venture, strikes a balance between the grave realities of life and the need for a hearty laugh.

Adding flavour to the drama is the foot-tapping, tear-jerking, soulful soundtrack of the film. It’s a Punjabi music feast that elevates the film’s narrative and keeps the energy levels soaring.

The performances are as varied as the characters. Jobanpreet Singh as Shinda gives a strong performance that’s as loaded as a double cheeseburger. Jeet Singh delivers a sincere portrayal of Sanju, while Jashn Kohli as Ghabrati keeps the laughter meter running. The chemistry between the three leads is as real as the ghee on your aloo parathas! Gurbani Gill, although in a limited role, leaves an impression that lasts longer than your mom’s homemade pickle.

The film’s dialogues are sprinkled with life lessons on duty, sacrifice, unity, and the importance of sticking to your roots. It resonates with the youth, encouraging them not to fly off to foreign lands in search of success but to bloom where they are planted.
