In the saga of everyday drama, we have the Kaushal clan, where Yug and Reet are so engrossed in their career ladder climbing, they’ve forgotten they have parents. Talk about tunnel vision, right? And as if that isn’t enough, their mum and dad, who’ve been together for more than two decades, have decided to take a timeout from each other. Now, there’s a plotline worth a bowl of popcorn.
The film tries to wrap its arms around the big ‘L’ – love, the ties that bind, and the possibility of second innings in life. It’s a sentimental journey filled with so many twists and turns, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled into a Bollywood version of a rollercoaster ride.
Now, let’s talk about our protagonist, Yug (Pavail Gulati), a small-town guy turned big city dweller, who’s so busy racing against time, he doesn’t even realize his parents are on the path to splitsville. And while he’s busy judging their so-called antiquated lifestyle, they decide to give modernity a whirl and contemplate on unbuckling their marriage. Talk about role reversal!
This 131-minute emotional marathon, courtesy of Seemaa Desai, tries to convince us that love deserves a second chance and that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. So, after 27 years of comfy couch companionship, the Kaushal parents decide to chase their long-lost dreams – dad wants to croon qawwali tunes, while mum wants to create aromatic wonders. I tell you, this is the stuff of soap operas!
The film does a decent job of highlighting generational gaps, the ever-changing dynamics of relationships, and the imperfections that make us human. But be warned, it does get a bit draggy while trying to hammer home its central themes.
On to the acting chops – Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chaddha, our soon-to-be-separated couple, are quite the pair. Their on-screen bickering is so real, you’d think they’ve been practicing at home. Pavail Gulati brings a fresh vibe to the film, making Yug a poster boy for the confused millennial. Isha Talwar, as Yug’s ladylove Kiara, reminds us of the binding force of parental unity. The supporting cast also chips in, with each adding their unique flavour to the narrative.
The film’s cinematography does a commendable job in capturing the stark contrasts between the hustle and bustle of Noida and the laid-back charm of Kannauj. But the music, well, it’s a bit of a letdown, save for ‘Mann Ye Bawra’, a soulful romantic number.
In a nutshell, ‘Kaushaljis VS Kaushal’ is a mixed bag of family drama, love, and self-exploration. It has its moments, but also its share of yawn-inducing stretches. But hey, if family sagas are your cup of chai, then this one might just be worth a watch.
