Trust Issues & Text Messages: A Film Review of the Modern Romcom Dance with Digital Dilemmas

🙄🙄🤔🙄🙄 (2.5/5)

Oh, you youngsters and your phones! If you’re not exchanging spit, you’re swapping screens. 🤦‍♀️

Hello, darlings! Review Rani is here to spill the chai on the latest rom-com to hit the big screen. So, grab your popcorn and prepare to be entertained…or not.

Are you ready to meet Gaurav (Junaid Khan) and Baani (Khushi Kapoor)? They’re the two lovebirds who think they’ve got the love thing all figured out…until they have to switch phones for a day. 📱💔 Yes, you read that right! Baani’s dad, Atul (Ashutosh Rana), wants to test their trust before giving his marriage blessing and what better way than with a good old-fashioned phone swap? 😂 The drama that ensues is the backbone of this…umm…youthful comedy.

Now, let’s talk about this ‘transparent’ relationship Gaurav and Baani prided themselves on. Trust? Pfft! What’s trust when you’ve got WhatsApp, Instagram, and a gazillion other apps at your fingertips? 📲 Thanks to the director Chandan Advait’s idea of romance, the couple’s lovey-dovey bubble is soon burst, and secrets start to spill faster than popcorn on a cinema floor.

The film takes its sweet time to get to the actual point, wasting a good half an hour on cliche love scenes before the phone swapping chaos begins. 🎬💤 And then, there’s the good old trick of keeping the audience hooked – focusing on Baani’s secrets in the first half and then shifting to Gaurav’s post-interval. Throw in a side plot featuring Gaurav’s sister, her fiance and his phone obsession, and you’ve got a recipe for…well, confusion.

Amidst the chaos, there are a few redeeming moments with Gaurav and his friends frantically trying to cover up his secrets. The trendy soundtrack by Tanishk Bagchi and Suyyash Rai also adds some much-needed energy to the film.

But don’t be fooled! This film isn’t all fun and games. It takes a stab at some deep issues like fake identities, deepfake videos, and the gap between the Boomers and Gen-Z. And let’s not forget the subtle nods towards body-shaming and gendered expectations in marriage.

Now, to the performances. Junaid Khan does a commendable job as the charming yet clueless Gaurav. Khushi Kapoor deserves a pat on the back for her portrayal of Baani, showing a surprising amount of emotional depth. And let’s not forget the supporting cast – Ashutosh Rana as the stern father and Grusha Kapoor as the loud, nagging mother deserve a shout out! 👏

Rani’s Wrap-Up:

Lovers of romantic comedies might find this film a breezy watch. But for those like Review Rani, who crave a bit more substance, this film is a bit of a letdown. Could it have been sharper, more focused? Absolutely! But then again, it’s a film about two kids swapping phones, what more can you really expect? 😂

Oh, to be young and in love…or should I say, in ‘situationship’. 🙄🤷‍♀️

Until next time, darlings. This is your one-and-only Review Rani, signing off! 💋
