Mithun Chakraborty: The Dancing Superstar of Bollywood

Mithun Chakraborty, born Gouranga Chakraborty on June 16, 1950, is a legendary Indian actor, singer, producer, writer, social worker, entrepreneur, television presenter and former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament. Known for his flamboyant style, impeccable dancing skills, and versatile acting, Mithun has left an indelible mark on the Hindi film industry over his illustrious career spanning more than four decades.

Early Life and Education

Mithun was born in Barisal, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) to a Bengali Hindu family. His father, Basanta Kumar Chakraborty, was an employee of the telephone department, while his mother, Shanti Rani Chakraborty, was a housewife. He attended the Oriental Seminary school in Kolkata and later earned his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from the Scottish Church College in Kolkata.

During his college days, Mithun was a member of the Naxalite movement for a brief period. However, he soon left the movement to pursue his passion for acting. He graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he studied acting.

Rise to Stardom

Mithun made his acting debut with the art house drama Mrigayaa in 1976, for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor. He went on to star in several critically acclaimed films in the 1970s and early 1980s, including Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, Surakshaa, and Hum Paanch.

However, it was his role as Jimmy in the 1982 film Disco Dancer that catapulted him to superstardom. The film was a massive commercial success and established Mithun as a dancing icon in Bollywood. He followed it up with a string of hit films in the 1980s, including Pyaar Jhukta Nahin, Dance Dance, Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, and Commando.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Mithun continued to work steadily in Bollywood, taking on character roles and supporting parts in films like Guru, Veer, and OMG – Oh My God!. He has also worked extensively in Bengali cinema, appearing in critically acclaimed films like Titli and Shukno Lanka.

Television Career

In addition to his film work, Mithun has also had a successful career on television. He hosted the immensely popular reality show Dance India Dance, which helped launch the careers of several talented young dancers. He has also appeared as a judge on several other dance reality shows, including Dance Plus and Dance Champions.

Personal Life and Philanthropy

Mithun has been married to actress Yogeeta Bali since 1979. The couple has four sons – Mahaakshay, Ushmey, Namashi and Dishani. Mahaakshay and Namashi have followed in their father’s footsteps and pursued careers in acting.

Apart from his acting career, Mithun is also known for his philanthropic work. He has been involved with several charitable organizations over the years and has worked to support various social causes, including education and healthcare for underprivileged children.
